This workshop will focus on different habits of communication and methods of creation. In the first part of the workshop, we build a common playground through improvisation-based “contemporary couple dances” and experiment with the physical practices that we created for our piece Ball. In the second part, we work with instantaneous composition or other methods to explore the relationship between performer and performer as well as performer and spectator. Nature Theater of Oklahoma directors Pavol Liska and Kelly Copper will guide participants in a hands-on workshop exploring both verbal and physical prompting techniques. Workshop participants will be working using audio texts from the company's Romeo and Juliet.

This workshop will be focused on the word presence – not in the sense of personality or interiority, but in a larger sense, which implicates the play, the listening, the way to be on a stage and a certain state of mind, linked to our performances. We'll approach this work through certain situations derived from our pieces which connect the participants among themselves and with the spectators. We will explore the ways of being together in a space of representation.

One day as I stood alone in the rehearsal space, I noticed that my body was breathing, repeatedly inhaling and exhaling. Being in throes of creating a theatrical version of dance at the time, it occurred to me that if I could write a conversation between Mr.Inhale and Mr.Exhale then that could be a play about the human body. This workshop is the exploration of that conversation.

Mathilde Monnier is the director of the Centre Chorégraphique National de Montpellier Languedoc Roussillon. Her productions are presented in Montpellier and all over the world. The significance and the vitality of her creativity are recognized by the international press, professionals and the public. Recipient of numerous prestigious awards and distinctions, she belongs to a generation of choreographers who gave dance its current status in France.
