iDANS 05 hosts between September 30th – October 10th  the travelling international development program for upcoming choreographers "Europe in Motion", a project supported by the EU, initiated by Springdance (Utrecht, NL), and conjoined by three partners: Brut (Vienna, AT), Dance4 (Nottingham, UK) and iDANS (İstanbul).

Invited to make a piece for the ballet of the Paris Opera by its director Brigitte Lefèvre, Jérôme Bel wanted to stage a kind of theatrical documentary on the work of one of the dancers of the ballet: Véronique Doisneau. The dancer, closed to the retirement age, alone on stage, retrospectively and subjectively considers her own career as ballerina inside this institution.  This film was shot during the last performance of the piece on the stage of the Palais Garnier. It has been produced thanks to Telmondis and the Paris Opéra, and co-realised by Pierre Dupouey and Jérôme Bel.

Inhabitant was the last work where South African choreographer and dancer Sello Pesa and conceptual artist and light designer Vaughn Sadie have been exploring how space is occupied and contested in the inner city space in the city of Johannesburg; the performative nature of light in the formation of space has always been one major focus of interest in these works. iDANS commissioned them to develop an Istanbul version of this highly interesting work. German artist Mirko Winkel will accompany them in the research phase in Istanbul.

One of the most important masters in contemporary choreography, Jérôme Bel’s The Show Must Go On, premiered in 2001, will be re-interpreted by all-local stage crew as part of 5th iDANS Festival.

Traversing the boundaries between work and leisure, performance and event, dilletantism and consumption, working at play or playing at work, CUE, proposed by the Spanish multi-disciplinary artist Diego Agulló, is a happening that aims neither the achievement of a result, nor the creation of a specific product. It aims to generate the conditions for an environment where communications, mis-communications, actions, and reactions are possible and welcome all at the same time. 

This performance will be staged on 18th and 19th of October.

Two excellent dancers prove that they are also meticulous workers as choreographers. The duo has developed a specific movement language which enables bodies to communicate without the use of symbolism, and yet generates theatricality. During these two days, In they invite the public to share the making of this unique language and have an insight into the foundations of their piece "The Ballet of Sam Hogue and Augustus Benjamin".

Conceived and developed by the French choreographer Loïc Touzé and pedagogue Anne Kerzerho and realized by a network of Istanbul team, Around the Table provides a platform for dialogue and reciprocity in the exchange of knowledge about the body by bringing together people from different occupations. What specific knowledges and uses of the body do different professions rely on? What do artists, researchers, lawyers, health workers, and sportsmen have in common?

In Allege, Clément Layes, one of the most striking young choreographers of the European dance scene in 2011, wobbles a glass of water from the side of his head to his forehead in a very accomplished fashion! However, these impressive and unusual skills are more than circus tricks and what started out as a work about the anxiety he feels towards the world has developed into a humorous philosophical treatise on habit and expectation.

The young Lisbon-based dancer and choreographer Marlene Monteiro Freitas develops a multi-layered performance in which the laboring, exotic, attractive, dancer body gives more than what is demanded of and exhausts everyone along with itself, in a Josephine Bakerian attitude.

Lecture / Performance

With his book Spangberianism, Mårten Spångberg, a Swedish curator, critic, and educator,  poses strong questions about the current stale situation of dance criticism in Europe and beyond and exposes what we take for granted and what assumptions we hide behind in the artistic field. He also challenges the mechanisms of producing and distributing, monopolizing and commercializing information concerning art in general and contemporary dance in particular.  

This performance will be staged on 18th and 19th of October.

In the public space/site specific version of their “mystic ballet” they invite the public to share the making of this unique language.

The recipient of last year’s Prix Jardin d’Europe Award within iDANS the E.I.O collective is back in the festival with the premiere of their new production. The collective continues their research about the contemporary value of art and the status of artists as workers.

Mustafa Kaplan and Filiz Sızanlı, close collaborators since 1997, revisit, re-enact and re-interpret the history of their work. Their repertory and accumulated experiences of working together provide the reference point of this new work.

The pioneer choreographer Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker had her unique stance on the world dance scene with her 1982 piece Fase. This work is set on the American minimalist composer Steve Reich’s composition consisting of four phases.Considered as one of the most significant works of dance history to date, Fase had heralded De Keersmaeker’s particular mathematical, precise and hypnotic style. Upon the international success of this work, De Keersmaeker founded her company Rosas. Fase, probably the most performed work among de Keersmaeker’s œuvre will be presented for the first time in Turkey. It will be a particularly fascinating experience to see De Keersmaeker dancing on stage!
