Eleven women from different walks of life and different generations share performatively their genuine take on their collective "circumstances."
Years of jumping rope, playing dodge ball and selling hand-made necklaces made out of sea shell. Debating the death penalty in the universities while impatiently awaiting our new "bayram" clothes. Nurturing ourselves only with domestic products, and participating in torchlight festivities. Trying to shape our breasts with teacups. Voluntary dim-outs, waiting on huge lines for gas. Some learned to read with the words: "Strike Here." As gunshots were fired in front of the local Soup-Shops, we turned on our electric-radios and waited for them to warm up. Birds rested on telegraph lines. We wore hoop skirts and crazily munched sunflower seeds. We had neighbors with classic names like Nebahat, Müzeyyen or Münevver. We continuously wrote compositions and hunted flies with plastic gadgets. We screamed "All You Need is Love" while properly humming "As Night Falls Sorrow Becomes Me Again" according to the tune...(Certain times happened, certain times didn't. Movement Atelier has been formed by Zeynep Günsür in Nov. 1999. It is a performing company continuously working with people from different backgrounds and with different bodies from ranging ages. The projects concentrating on the body and its expressions use different disciplines. The encounter of space-architecture/ sound-music/ movement- dance/text- literature/ film-media is experimented in various levels. These projects primarily focus on body's own history and memory. In a way, mental openings and conduct comes before the physical. The atelier continues to dwell into the need of creation in the field of performing arts. Another focus is the consent on establishing various creative territories for each participant. Each body has her own reasearch process and shares it in a common platform. Collective approach is a must. Movement Atelier is a member of Contemporary Performing Arts Initiation (ACPAI).
