Directory: Europe Endless and Directory: Songs of Love and War

The artistic duo deufert+plischke presents two parts of their choreo-cinematographic series entitled directory. While directory: europe endless is a double-portrait of the artistwin, a passage along and through their lives embarking on a vast spatio-temporal journey, the second act of the performance, directory: songs of love and war, tells the story of their self-invention as "artist twins," as brother and sister and as incestuous couple.

Directory: europe endless is a double-portrait of the artistwin, guiding the spectator along and trough their lives. It departs from childhood memories and travels along myths, suicides, families, gender-troubles and work on a journey from the countryside of Bavaria, through Berlin, the slums of Rio de Janeiro and Bologna. Directory: europe endless finishes with the meeting of deufert + plischke in Brussels in 2001, where the artistwin decided to work together. After an intermission the story of their singular lives resumes in the second part entitled directory: songs of love and war. In 2005 deufert + plischke embarked on a journey together up to the fringes of Europe, driving hundreds of kilometers in direction of the polar circle. Traveling with a photo by Diane Arbus, her famous "twins," on the dashboard of their 22 years old Saab, this image is set in-front of an ever-changing landscape. In this choreo-cinematographic experimentation, deufert + plischke develop their fiction of the identical twins and put it to test, probing the notion of difference ex negativo. Directory: songs of love and war is mentioned as one of the five best performances 2005 in the annual report of the Belgian theater critic Jeroen Peeters.
